What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a specialist in a branch of dentistry that focuses on straightening teeth and the correction of people’s bite and jaws. While orthodontics is used to improve aesthetics, it is not the sole purpose of an orthodontists’ who work to correct abnormal bites and improve dental function.
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
To become an orthodontist, a dentist must complete a 3-year specialised postgraduate training endorsed by a reputable University. Orthodontists are specialists who focus solely on orthodontic treatments ranging from mild to severely complex cases. Therefore, you can be assured that you will be receiving the best treatment from a highly trained specialist in the field.
Are braces only for children?
Braces are for everyone. Historically orthodontics was targeted at the adolescent group of young
individuals, however with the changes in technology and the improvements in the ceramic braces
and aligner therapy, there has been an increase in adults seeking orthodontic treatment. Hence, the
age from when treatment can start is from as early as 7 years of age with no limits of age upwards.
How long will it take?
Treatment time varies between individuals based on the complexity of their presenting bite and compliance throughout the duration of orthodontic treatment. On average, you can expect to wear braces from anywhere between 18 and 24 months for standard orthodontic treatment, and upwards for complex orthodontic cases.
What is the cost?
Treatment costs can vary greatly depending on the duration of treatment and nature and complexity of the presenting bite. Therefore, without an initial consultation, it is difficult to determine a set fee. At your consultation appointment an estimate can be provided, and there is no obligation to go ahead with treatment. All costs will be agreed upon with patients and parents before proceeding with treatment.
Do you offer payment plans?
Certainly, we offer interest free payment options that can be paid back on a weekly or monthly basis. Here an initial deposit is required, and the balance paid off in weekly/monthly instalments throughout the duration of the orthodontic treatment. The specifics of these payment options can be discussed in full prior to commencing treatment.
Do I need a referral?

Can I only eat soft food while my braces are on?
It is recommended that hard, sticky and crunchy foods are avoided as it can cause breakages, bend the wires, and cause undesirable movements of the teeth. You will still be able to enjoy the majority of your normal foods but may need to modify the way in which you eat. A full list of foods that you will need to avoid, will be provided to you when you commence treatment.
Can I still play sport?
Absolutely! It is however recommended that you wear a mouthguard, particularly if you are playing a contact sport. This can be tricky with braces and we are happy to help you fit one.
